Doctor Ackland has had extensive involvement in cancer clinical trials, clinical pharmacokinetics of anti-cancer drugs and pre-clinical pharmacology of anti-cancer drugs and combinations. He has been the principal investigator on several Australian multi-institutional randomised controlled trials, one in breast cancer and principal investigator on a number of phase I & II trials. He is/has been a member of the trial management committee of a number of multi-institutional trials in breast and gastro-intestinal cancer.
He is an author of over 70 original publications in peer-reviewed journals and first author on 19 of these.
Doctor Ackland is a past-President of Clinical Oncology Society of Australia (COSA) 2004-2005 and has been a Council Member since 1999. He is currently a board member of Cancer Council NSW and ANZ Breast Cancer Trials Group.
