Completed Trials

The AGITG has completed three phase II trials of relevance to the Australasian cancer clinical community — AG9801, AG9601 and AG0001H. A brief overview of these trials is provided here. For more detailed information, please refer to the Clinical Trials section of our web site.

Advanced and metastatic gastric cancer trial (AG9801)

AG9801 was a phase II trial assessing the impact of a new chemotherapy combination (irinotecan, 5 — FU and leucovorin) on tumor growth in people with advanced and metastatic gastric cancer. Eighty — two patients participated in the study. The results were reported at the American Society of Clinical Oncology (ASCO) meeting in 2000.

Resectable gastric cancer trial (AG9601)

AG9601 was a phase II study designed to investigate the feasibility of delivering pre — and post-operative chemotherapy to people with advanced but resectable gastric cancer. The study recruited 59 patients and was a prelude to the international trial — MAGIC. This study was instrumental in creating strong collaboration between upper gastro-intestinal surgeons and medical oncologists throughout Australasia.

Advanced hepatocellular carcinoma trial (AG0001H)

This trial was a pilot study assessing the impact of a monthly injection of long-acting octreotide (Sandostatin LAR®) in people with advanced hepatocellular carcinoma. This was the first trial in hepatocellular carcinoma developed and run by the AGITG. Our ability to recruit patients was clearly demonstrated with 63 patients enrolled in just 10 months. The results of this trial suggested that further investigation of octreotide in a phase III trial is warranted.
