Alison Austin was motivated to try and improve GI cancer treatments by raising funds for the GI CANCER Institute after the death of a friend. “Nobody ever expected our friend to be diagnosed with cancer, much less to die from it,” says Alison, “the shock was enormous.”
Alison is aiming to raise $20,000 for the GI CANCER Institute by shaving off her hair. An event was held in Sydney on November 11, 2011 where Alison and her son Jasper had their heads shaved.
“I have a lot of hair!” says Alison, “people are always telling me how lucky I am, and I do feel lucky, but not about my hair, more about my health. I often think about how I’ve had long hair for so many years and that it will be a shock to have it all gone and then I think of my friend and the shock of his diagnosis and death within weeks and nothing compares to that.”
Alison has received lots of encouragement for her fundraising goal and she is keen to share the message about GI cancers with her community and particularly her children that nothing is as important as health and happiness.
