A message from Caroline Kelly

My heartfelt thanks to all those who walked, donated, sponsored and helped out, at the first of what I hope becomes an annual fixture. It was an incredible day with over 230 people turning up to support the walk and more than $46,000 being raised, an extraordinary result. Many came dressed in purple, the international colour of pancreatic cancer, which made a beautiful sight to observe the flow of purple across Palm Beach. Special Guests the Hon Bronwyn Bishop MP, Michael Luscombe and Patron of the fund, Roger Corbett spoke eloquently about why we were there.

The day would not have been such a success without the amazing Committee that manage the Fund and a very special thanks to Karen Luscombe, Lynne Umbers and Maysoon El-Ahmad who were an un-stoppable force in ensuring the day went without hitch. Thanks also to Russell Conley, Alan Lawrance and Leonie Philips from the GI CANCER Institute for manning the registration desk and all their work leading up to the day.

Thank you also to all those who offered words of support and encouragement for what we are trying to achieve, it has inspired me to do all that I can to advance research.

About Pancreatic Cancer

Pancreatic cancer is the most lethal of all adult cancers with a current 5 year survival rate that stands at only 4.6%.

The pancreas is a thin, lumpy gland that lies deep in the body between the stomach and the spine. Its job is to produce insulin, to control the amount of sugar in the blood and enzymes, which help in food digestion.

Treatment for pancreatic cancer depends on how early the cancer has been found – surgery is offered to patients that have been diagnosed early, but for the vast majority (85% of patients), surgery is not an option and the typical treatment offered is pain management.

Making a Difference

The trial that the Avner Nahmani Pancreatic Cancer Research Fund is supporting will focus on the development of biomarkers which may help pancreatic cancer researchers and clinicians select the optimal treatment for each individual patient.

This approach, also called personalized medicine, is underpinned by an understanding of the biological uniqueness of each patient and their tumour and is hoped to improve patient outcomes.  To read more click here.
