Kick a Goal for Bowel Cancer
Monday 29th May 2006
11.30am – 1pm Martin Place, Sydney
Kick a Goal for Bowel Cancer has been organised by the Gastrointestinal Cancer Institute to raise public awareness of Australia’s most common, yet least talked about cancer and educate the public on the importance of screening, early detection and treatment in increasing survival rates.
12,000 Australians are diagnosed with bowel cancer each year1 and it is the second highest cancer killer, with over 90 people dying each week2. Early detection is vital as evidence shows that screening for bowel cancer can reduce deaths by up to 30-40 percent3.
On Monday 29th May 2006, cancer specialists from across Australia travelled to Sydney to take part in the inaugural Kick a Goal for Bowel Cancer, in an effort to raise much needed awareness of our nation’s most prevalent cancer.
Teams of AGITG members representing each state competed against each other in a football penalty shoot-out hosted by Les Murray, Australia’s leading football commentator and AGITG Chairman, Professor John Zalcberg.
The University of Sydney team kicked the most goals on the day. The university team comprised staff from the University of Sydney NHMRC Clinical Trials Centre that work on AGITG trials investigating new approaches to treatment of gastrointestinal cancer.
