Trevor Begg's Story

Trevor Beggs

Trevor loved music and was skilled at delivering a one-liner that would have his family doubled over in laughter. Using his communication skills Trevor was an active supporter of the GI CANCER Institute often speaking on how clinical trials provided hope to suffers of finding better ways to treat cancer.
Trevor Beggs, was born in Narrandera, southern NSW in 1938 and was blessed with a beautiful singing voice. In his early years he won the open baritone section in the Sydney Eisteddfod and later joined the Sydney Philharmonia Choir performing at the Sydney Opera house, Mozart’s “Il Seraglio”. He also sang principal roles in “Faust”, “The Barber of Seville”, “Madam Butterfly”, and “The Marriage of Figaro”.

Sharing his love of music was his wife Barbara who between them raised four children.

In 2002 Trevor was diagnosed with bowel cancer which had a profound impact on his life in many ways.

During the early period of his treatment Trevor was trouble by pain.  Feeling the need for support and more information about the disease he joined the San Cancer Support Centre (CSC).  This vicious illness that devastated him both physically and mentally in the first few months motivated him to embrace the idea “to be the best he could be”.

Over the next 6 years Trevor became a passionate advocate of the cancer support groups and the GI CANCER Institute.  He spoke publicly about the issues facing survivors following treatment for cancer and the hope that clinical trials are bringing to improve cancer treatments.

Trevor also tapped into his love of music and recognising the healing benefits of music, Trevor organised and ran with the help of  Vicki, the music therapist a number of music appreciate series.

These talks that Trevor gave and his passion to find ways to help people had a significant impact on the lives of many people living with cancer, and their carers.  He was articulate, well respected, and a very committed volunteer. He has made many friends through the GI CANCER Institute and the San Support Centre and will be sadly missed and fondly remembered.
