Susan Emery's Story

Susan Emery

I’ve always loved horses and now I run an equestrian centre on a beautiful property just outside of Sydney. We bought the property as a retirement home for my horse and it was so lovely my husband and I moved out there ourselves.
At our equestrian centre we run school camps for children which are very lively. At the end of one of these camps I began to feel some pain and then the next day I was in hospital, the diagnosis was cancer.

It was such a big shock because I was otherwise healthy and didn’t expect it to be hit out of the blue by cancer. I had no symptoms until the night before I was diagnosed so it was a terrible surprise.

But, it’s not all bad!

Since then some fantastic things have happened and I’m much less fearful of having cancer now.

Being part of the GI CANCER Institute's Consumer Advisory Panel you learn that cancer is not the end of the journey, it’s just the beginning. There is so much research being done and so many trials that there is in fact a lot of hope around cancer.

Clinical trials are vitally important because without them we won’t make any new advances in terms of what we do with medicine. Trials mean that we can find different ways to improve the quality of life and outcomes for patients. I think I’m having a much better life now, I appreciate it more. I can smell the jasmine!
